Laundry Soap

Making your own laundry detergent not only saves money, but it protects the environment by using natural ingredients.

Ingredients & Tools:

  • 2 cups soap shavings
  • 1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • Water to fill to 3 gallons
  • 5 Gallon container
  • Pot large enough to hold 5 cups of water
  • Long stirring stick/spoon (for 5 gallon container)
Add soap shavings to the pot with 3-5 cups of water. Bring the water just shy of a boil and stir until the soap is completely melted. It will sit and have to be stirred occasionally for about ten minutes. Once all of the soap shavings are melted, pour the mixture into the 5-gallon container and stir, adding the soda and borax, adding three gallons of water after that is dissolved. Shake between each use to break up clumps, which are normal and will dissolve in the laundry.
Baby Wipes
Dissolve 1/2 cup shavings in 3 cups of water in pot on stove stirring occasionally over ten minutes. Add 1 cup Olive oil (you can steep olive oil in calendula flowers for a few weeks if you like, sealing them in a container together). Pour into cloths container & Store the rest.
Dish Soap
Dissolve 1 cup shavings in two cups hot water, stirring occassionally over ten minutes. Pour into squeezable container. Shake between uses.
